TSET Healthy Futures Initiative
The Oklahoma Association of Youth Services (OAYS) partners with the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) through their Healthy Future Initiatives to provide support to children and youth grades three through eight in making healthy life choices through tobacco prevention, healthy lifestyles/nutrition, activity, life skills, and character education.
The Framework
The Successful Futures Program is based on the 40 Developmental Assets Framework, an evidence-based model widely used nationally for developing strong and healthy youth. Created by Search Institute, a national non-profit organization, the framework focuses on cultivating healthy relationships, opportunities, and personal strengths.
School Partners
The Successful Futures program focuses on creating opportunities that promote healthy eating, activity, and nutrition, preventing tobacco use among children and youth grades three through eight, and promoting life skills and character education. Our programming focuses on health, physical activity, tobacco prevention, life skills, and character education. One of our initiative's mainstays includes Botvin LifeSkills. The overall framework for our program is based on the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets. This framework has been proven effective in enhancing children's and youth's well-being. The Botvin LifeSkills program and the 40 Developmental Assets framework have been extensively researched and have a proven track record of reducing risk factors while raising protective factors for children and youth. Although these are two of our foundational curriculums, we have many resources to customize to the needs of your school. We can also target specific emergent issues such as vaping and marijuana use. Our program is specifically designed to address a range of needs, ensuring a comprehensive approach to student development. We can tailor our resources to tackle the following:
-
Behavioral issues through targeted life skills lessons
-
Reducing absenteeism and tardiness
-
Effective conflict resolution strategies that are vital for a harmonious school atmosphere
-
Addressing other behavioral health concerns, including mental well-being
Furthermore, we are equipped to handle emergent issues such as vaping and marijuana use, providing timely and relevant interventions. Our team is committed to working closely with your school, teachers, staff, and administration. Our primary objective is to deliver substantial social-emotional support and enhance learning opportunities. Some ways our staff can contribute include:
-
Leading activities and games in gym classes to promote physical health
-
Stepping into classrooms, utilizing lesson plans that focus our core metrics with relevant learning opportunities
-
Providing specialized support in both special education and regular classrooms to foster decision-making skills
-
Designing and implementing programs to improve educational success and strengthen students connection to the school
-
Conducting workshops for teachers, staff, and parents, extending the social-emotional learning (SEL) principles beyond the classroom
These initiatives are not just about academic achievement; they are about shaping well-rounded, emotionally intelligent individuals who can navigate the complexities of today's world with confidence and empathy. We are excited to collaborate and tailor our approach to meet the specific needs of Oklahoma's educational community within the scope of our contract. Rest assured, there will be no financial burden on the school or district for these services. We are confident this initiative will significantly benefit the students, families, and community of our local schools statewid
